Immigration and Naturalization

[For an overview of the Naturalization Process and Naturalization Records, 1790-present, click here.]

The Naturalization Records Index for Portage County is the result of over 6 months of work by volunteers.  Each document was viewed and selective information was recorded.

When searching this Index keep in mind that these were transcribed from the original records.  The handwriting on many of the documents was sometimes difficult to read.  If you cannot find your ancestor, try looking for spelling variations.  Some of the difficulties encountered were: S's looking like L's, V's looking like W's, and vice-versa.  Many of the names were spelled phonetically - as they sounded.   Be creative with your searching.

If the field is blank it is either because it was left blank on the document or, in the case of some of the Final Papers, it was never a part of the original form.

If you find more than one entry for your ancestor, check the Record Type.  Some people may have two or three records which could represent their Declaration of Intent, Petition, and/or Final Papers.  These may or may not have additional information.

These naturalization records are housed at the UW-SP Archives.  If contacting them for copies, you need to provide the following information if available in the index:

Last Name
First Name
Country of Origin
Date Filed
Record Type
Series
Box
Folder
Vol.
Page or Cert. No.

Copies can also be found online at FamilySearch.org, though they are not searchable. In order to see the actual images you will need to register with them.
